Tutoring and Mentoring
I provide remote tutoring and educational coaching to a select group of elementary, middle/high school and college students*. The sessions are customized to current individual needs and interests.
in addition to homework assistance and quiz/test prep, sessions can include custom explanatory slide decks, focused content explorations, and student-initiated projects,
My enthusiasm for tutoring comes from my desire to “pay forward” the valuable support and guidance I’ve received from my mentors. I can never directly repay the sage advice provided by these experts in the fields of engineering, journalism, education, interactive media, and public health.
So I take some time each week to provide this kind of support to a small group of students in math and science – and hopefully improve their “content confidence” and inspire them to explore more on their own.
I’ve taught, tutored, and coached students of all ages from 4 to 60. Most recently, I taught Game Design at American University in DC. Current students include a high school junior, college sophomore, and 5th grader.
Bob has been an amazing guide, not just a tutor for our son. He makes his classes so interesting and appealing that our 10 yo requested his classes with teacher Bob to be longer! They cover everything - science, coding, maths, experiments, and Bob's tutoring has helped him advance at school across all of these disciplines. Highly recommended! Aygun S.
We are absolutely overjoyed to finally find a tutor who is making a positive difference for our son. He was really struggling with Math and because of his his work with Robert, his test scores improved immediately. What is perhaps more important is that his confidence in problem solving has also grown. Michael M.

Process
I tailor each session to meet a student’s evolving needs and abilities. Initial sessions often start with homework assistance, which can stimulate creation of custom study guides to help students overcome misconceptions. Quiz/Test prep usually comes next and can involve personalized practice problems.
As the students improve and start to feel more confident, we can then explore topics that students suggest and construct links between their interests and core curriculum.
Specific approaches and activities can include:
-
Custom quizzes to evaluate student strengths and target areas
-
"Think aloud" chats that challenge students to talk through complicated problems to produce correct results on their own
-
Personalized "worked problems", sample exercises, and detailed slide decks to guide student learning
-
Focused "finals week prep" strategy for college students
Collaborative Approach
I like to establish a warm, supportive connection with students rather than being a stern task-master. Learning happens faster when a student feels encouraged and appreciated. I look for ways to personalize the experience by adapting the lessons to each student’s learning style and particular interests.

Most of us can remember that special teacher who took an interest in us, whose focused attention to what and how we were learning gave us confidence to explore our abilities and interests.
Hi Bob. Thank you so much for posting the chemistry study guide. It made it much easier to understand the online lab that was driving me crazy. I truly appreciate all your help. Taylor M. (19)
Hi! Thank you for creating those trig practice problems. They were extremely helpful in prepping for my quiz. I'm looking forward to our next session Kasey R. (18)
