Designer/Grant Writer
About

Most of my work focuses on identifying and developing "fundable concepts" that address unmet needs in the areas of education and health. I have set up "grant proposal pipelines" that track the simultaneous evolution of multiple potential grant proposals at all stages of proposal development process: needs analysis, funder/funding research, prior art research, creative ideation with team members, one-page summaries, pre-proposals, full proposals including program description, rationale, budgets, budget justifications, and scheduling.
I also consult with organizations such as UCSF and the American University Game Lab on the design and production of innovative health and educational games. My efforts include UX design, project management, ideation of new potential products, and optimization of production processes.
Previously I was an Asst. Professor at the American University (AU) Game lab where I taught courses on game design and wrote successful proposals that supported innovative projects with the National Institute of Mental Health, Institute of Museum Library Services, and WGBH-NOVA as Sr. Producer/Designer ($235K in total funding).
Prior to joining AU in 2015, I was the Founder and Creative Director of Red Hill Studios–a boutique developer of innovative health games and educational software/games. I wrote many successful grant proposals to the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation that received over $8M in funding. These funds supported talented programmers, artists, and producers as we created many award-winning games, exhibits, and apps.
I'm also an award-winning documentary filmmaker who created science and public affairs documentaries for KQED-TV (PBS-San Francisco) and WGBH (PBS-Boston) and received Peabody and Emmy awards for my docs.
I like to keep learning and exploring new opportunities as they emerge.
Outside of work, I'm a loving father to my awesome daughter Danni, proud member of the Behr clan (my mom's side), and enjoy designing and constructing new geometric origami creations.
